Hawaii has a special place in my heart. Every time I write about it, I get the pleasure of going back there in my mind. This book takes place during Christmas. I treasure the Christmases I spent on Oahu, but I have to admit it was a funny feeling, at first, to spend Christmas Day on a warm, sunny beach.
When we first moved to Hawaii, I announced to my sons and husband that I wasn't going to decorate a traditional tree, but instead would string lights over a palm tree. My youngest son (a stickler for tradition) about flipped out. "We've got to have a traditional tree," he said, fire in his eyes. So, we went into the town of Mililani and bought a small Christmas tree. A few years later, when we moved from Hawaii, back to the mainland, I brought the tree with us. I have it to this day. Every time, I decorate it, I think of Hawaii and how I'm grateful that we went the traditional route.
